Join us for an afternoon with Katherine McKittrick and Nasrin Himada discussing the collaborative exhibition A Smile Split by the Stars: An Experiment by Katherine McKittrick. The exhibition centers on nourbeSe philip’s poem “Meditations on the Declension of Beauty by the Girl with the Flying Cheek-bones,” exploring black girlhood, femininity, and revolutionary aesthetics that challenge colonial narratives.

A Smile Split by the Stars brings together multiple voices—including nourbeSe philip, Juliane Okot Bitek, Trish Salah, Cora Gilroy-Ware, Chloé Savoie-Bernard, Yaniya Lee, Sameen Mahboubi, Aaliyah Strachan, Muna Dahir, Cristian Ordóñez, and Roya DelSol—working across text, photography, sound, and design to create new interpretations of philip’s poem.

McKittrick will deliver a lecture on the exhibition’s themes, followed by Himada’s curatorial insights and a discussion moderated by Balbir K. Singh with audience Q&A.

Please note that this event will be livestreamed on 4th Space’s Youtube Channel.
